La Grange des Elettes, Saumur Champigny, Jean Jacques Derouard

La Grange des Elettes, Saumur Champigny is a red wine appellation of Saumur in the central Loire Valley. Made predominantly from Cabernet Franc, they are typically light or medium bodied.  Also characterized by crisp acidity and slightly spicy flavors.

Domaine des Elettes is a 4 generations family business. Jean-Jacques Derouard started working there with his father in 1989, when there were only 9 hectares of vines. 15 years later, he became head of the farm and now manages 20 hectares of vineyards in the appellation.

These 20 hectares grow mainly on clay-limestone soils.

The vines are grassed and cultivated in reasoned fight. Each plot is stripped of the leaves and carefully prepared so that the grapes reach optimum maturity.

The Saumur Champigny age in tanks and barrels between 7 to 8 months. Therefore it is bottled in April or during May.

Underground cellars preserve the wine which are old quarries from where stones called “tuffeau” can be found (the stone from the famous King’s Chateau de la Loire).
